Dean of the UGM Faculty of Cultural Sciences, Professor Setiadi, expressed his profound condolences over the passing of the former Dean of the UGM Faculty of Literature (1997–2000). He described her passing as a tremendous loss for the faculty and added that she had long been recognized as a teacher, mentor, and role model whose contributions greatly shaped the faculty’s development.

“She laid a strong foundation for academic excellence, scholarly culture, and humanitarian values, the impact of which we continue to feel and uphold today,” he said during Professor Siti Chamamah’s final tribute ceremony at UGM’s Balairung.

Professor Setiadi further said that throughout her life, Professor Siti Chamamah dedicated herself to advancing literature and culture while nurturing generations of capable and principled scholars. He also described her as an authoritative yet humble educator who remained approachable to colleagues, faculty members, and students alike.

“Her exemplary character was reflected not only in the classroom and academic forums but also in her daily life. God willing, her example will continue to live on and remain a priceless legacy for all of us,” he said.

Meanwhile, UGM Rector Professor Ova Emilia said that Professor Siti Chamamah’s passing was a profound loss for the entire university, as she had made significant contributions to advancing knowledge, particularly in philology and literature.

“Professor Siti Chamamah was widely recognized as a distinguished scholar and expert in philology and literature. She was also an active figure in the Muhammadiyah movement and served as Chair of the Central Executive Board of ‘Aisyiyah from 2000 to 2010,” she said.

Professor Ova added that Professor Siti Chamamah’s 46 years of dedication as an educator produced numerous scholarly works and set an enduring example for the UGM academic community. She concluded by expressing her hope that Professor Siti Chamamah’s lifelong devotion, knowledge, and service would be accepted as amal jariyah (ongoing charitable deeds) and that her family would be granted strength and patience.

“May she be granted the highest place by Allah and may all her good deeds be accepted. May her family also be blessed with patience, strength, and sincere acceptance during this difficult time,” she said.

Representing the family, her daughter, Dr. Nurul Chusna, expressed gratitude to Universitas Gadjah Mada and the entire academic community for honoring her mother with a final tribute. She shared that throughout more than 46 years of service at UGM, her mother maintained a deep love for her alma mater until the end of her life.

“Even during her final days, when her health had declined, she often spoke about UGM and the Faculty of Cultural Sciences. It was a testament to the profound affection she had for the institution that became such an important part of her life’s journey,” Dr. Chusna recalled.

In closing, Dr. Chusna also apologized on behalf of the family for any mistakes her mother may have made during her lifetime or for any responsibilities she may not have had the opportunity to fulfill. She expressed hope that the knowledge, exemplary character, and service her mother had left behind would continue to become amal jariyah, bringing ongoing rewards.

“If there are any promises she was unable to fulfill or responsibilities that still remain, we kindly ask you to contact our family so that we may carry them out on her behalf, and may her path to paradise be eased,” she concluded.

Artikel Remembering Prof. Siti Chamamah Soeratno, UGM’s Esteemed Philology and Literature Scholar pertama kali tampil pada Universitas Gadjah Mada.

During her lifetime, Professor Retno was known as a compassionate and honest educator who dedicated herself to mentoring students and junior colleagues. She often likened human beings to an empty glass that could be filled with anything. 

“She always hoped that whatever filled that empty glass would be meaningful, enlightening, and guided by divine wisdom,” recalled UGM Rector Professor Ova Emilia.

On behalf of the entire university community, Professor Ova expressed her deepest condolences on Professor Retno’s passing. 

“We are all grateful for the opportunity to have known Professor Retno personally and to have worked alongside her in various capacities. We are equally thankful that she served as an exemplary figure for the Universitas Gadjah Mada community. God willing, her scholarly contributions and lifelong service will continue to inspire future generations and advance the development of knowledge,” she said.

Professor Retno made significant contributions to UGM throughout her career. She served as Vice Rector for Research and Community Service from 2002 to 2007 and as Senior Vice Rector for Student Affairs, Community Services, and Alumni from 2007 to 2012. During her tenure, she was widely respected as a role model for researchers and recognized for her expertise as both an initiator and evaluator of academic programs.

Among the major initiatives she helped develop were the establishment of UGM’s Integrated Research and Testing Laboratory (LPPT) and the creation of the UGM Vocational College (SV UGM). Before SV UGM was established as an independent institution, diploma programs were dispersed across eight faculties. Under the new structure, they have been consolidated and professionally managed within a dedicated academic unit.

Professor Agus Sartono, Professor at the UGM Faculty of Economics and Business (FEB UGM) and one of her colleagues during their service in the university leadership, described Professor Retno as deeply dedicated to her work, humble, and open-minded. He also noted that she played an instrumental role in the successful construction of the UGM Faculty of Social and Political Sciences (Fisipol UGM) building and the UGM Academic Hospital (RSA UGM) without significant obstacles. 

“Farewell, Professor Retno Sudibyo. You have contributed so much. God willing, your good deeds will become a bridge to paradise,” said Professor Agus.

Professor Retno was inaugurated as a UGM professor in 2002 with her inaugural lecture titled “Metabolit Sekunder: Manfaat dan Perkembangannya dalam Dunia Farmasi.” Throughout her distinguished career in pharmaceutical sciences, she was known for her humility, discipline, vision, and outstanding leadership.

According to the biography read by Professor Raden Rara Endang Lukitaningsih, Vice Dean for Finance, Assets, and Human Resources at Pharmacy UGM, Professor Retno earned her bachelor’s degree in Pharmacy UGM in 1976, completed her pharmacist professional program in 1977, obtained her master’s degree in Pharmacy from the University of Kentucky, United States, and later earned her doctoral degree from Pharmacy UGM.

After serving two terms as vice rector, Professor Retno served on the UGM Academic Senate and the Permanent Council of Professors at Pharmacy UGM from 2012 until her retirement. She continued to serve the faculty after retirement and received numerous awards in recognition of more than 35 years of dedicated service.

Artikel UGM Mourns the Passing of Professor Retno Sunarminingsih pertama kali tampil pada Universitas Gadjah Mada.

Representing the family, Professor Hardyanto Soebono, Professor of Dermatology and Venereology, expressed gratitude to UGM, FK-KMK UGM, and Dr. Sardjito Hospital, all of which had been integral parts of the late professor’s lifelong service and dedication. 

“He was a prominent figure and pioneer in the development of oncology medicine, not only at UGM but also at the national and even international levels,” said Professor Hardyanto during the memorial ceremony held at the Balairung of the UGM Central Building on Friday (May 29).

According to him, the late Professor Soeripto was not only an accomplished academic and physician but also someone with a deep appreciation for the arts and culture. Beyond his academic pursuits, he was actively involved in the traditional art of Javanese puppetry. 

“He once studied puppetry at Habirandha, the Yogyakarta Palace’s school of puppetry,” he said.

On that occasion, the family formally handed over the late professor’s remains to UGM to receive final honors before burial at the UGM family cemetery complex in Sawitsari, Yogyakarta.

The Head of the Department of Anatomical Pathology at FK-KMK UGM, Dr. Hanggoro Tri Rinonce, had the opportunity to read the late professor’s biography. Professor Soeripto was born in Nganjuk on March 16, 1940, and completed his entire higher education journey at Universitas Gadjah Mada, from medical education and professional training to master’s, doctoral, and specialist education in anatomical pathology.

His academic career began in 1969 as a civil servant and lecturer. Over the years, he advanced through various academic ranks before ultimately being appointed as a professor at UGM. Throughout his years of service, Professor Soeripto received numerous awards, including recognition for 10 and 25 years of dedicated service at UGM, as well as the 30-Year Satyalancana Karya Satya Award from the Government of the Republic of Indonesia.

UGM Rector Professor Ova Emilia expressed profound condolences over the passing of one of UGM’s most respected educators. She noted that Professor Soeripto completed his doctoral studies at UGM in 1988 and was later inaugurated as a professor, delivering an inaugural scientific lecture titled “Diagnosis and Epidemiology of Cancer in Yogyakarta.”

Professor Ova stated that, in addition to being known as a scholar with strong academic principles, Professor Soeripto had a deep interest in Eastern spirituality and meditation practices. According to her, he viewed these practices as pathways toward balance and a deeper understanding of human life. 

“One message from him that is always remembered is: seek the truth, serve the truth, become the truth. Truth will reveal itself when the heart is filled with love,” she said.

Professor Ova also expressed gratitude for having had the opportunity to know and work alongside Professor Soeripto. She thanked him for being a teacher and role model for herself and the wider UGM academic community. 

“All of his scholarly contributions and lifelong service will, God willing, become a gateway for the continued development of future fields of worship and knowledge,” she concluded.

On behalf of the entire UGM academic community, Professor M. Baiquni, Chair of the UGM Board of Professors, conveyed condolences. 

“On behalf of the Universitas Gadjah Mada, we extend our deepest condolences to the family of Professor Sebastian Margino,” he said.

Professor Baiquni recalled the late professor as a friendly and courteous colleague who always created a sense of comfort in his surroundings. He was also known for his dedication to scholarship, as reflected in his extensive publications in books and journals, particularly in the field he specialized in Agricultural Biotechnology.

According to Professor Baiquni, the late professor was one of UGM’s exemplary figures. 

“Not only did he devote great attention to academic work, but Professor Sebastian Margino was also one of UGM’s finest scholars who consistently worked hard and dedicated his energy and time to the development of the university. He never ceased contributing to UGM,” he recalled.

Professor Baiquni also noted that Professor Sebastian delivered his inaugural professorial address on May 18, 2002. At the time, he presented a lecture titled “Microbiology in the Perspective of Agricultural Biotechnology: Prospects and Challenges.”

In the biography read by the Dean of the UGM Faculty of Agriculture, Jaka Widada, Ph.D., it was noted that Professor Sebastian completed his undergraduate degree in Agricultural Microbiology at UGM and later pursued his master’s and doctoral studies at the University of Tokyo, Japan. He had served as a lecturer at UGM since 1979 and received numerous awards in recognition of his long-standing dedication.

Artikel Professor Sebastian Margino from Agriculture UGM Passed Away at 72 pertama kali tampil pada Universitas Gadjah Mada.

Several alumni conveyed their condolences while recalling the figure widely known as the “Father of KKN” during the 1990s to early 2000s. The title was bestowed on him for his long tenure as head of the Institute of Community Service (LPM) at UGM.

Whenever teams of students were deployed for the Community Service Program (KKN) across Java Island or in areas around the Special Region of Yogyakarta and Central Java, Murdjito consistently made time to visit and engage with students serving in villages.

In 2011, Murdjito served as a judge at the 24th National Student Scientific Week (PIMNAS) in Makassar, South Sulawesi. Following the event, the panel of judges from UGM received a special invitation from the Regent of North Toraja, Frederik Batti Sorring, to visit his residence in Rantepao.

After traveling by bus for approximately 10 hours, the group attended what was essentially a gesture of gratitude to Murdjito. In front of him, Sorring recalled his own experience undertaking KKN as a Philosophy student at UGM. After graduating and working as a family planning counselor in Asmat, Papua, Sorring admitted that his KKN experience greatly helped him interact with local communities.

During his lifetime, Gatot Murdjito was recognized as an academic who made significant contributions to community service. He played an active role in managing the KKN and empowering the Student Activity Unit (UKM) within UGM. In addition, he mentored various community empowerment programs in the Special Region of Yogyakarta.

Dean of the Faculty of Animal Science, Professor Budi Guntoro, stated that Gatot Murdjito was known as a firm and disciplined lecturer, yet one who embodied kindness and sincerity. According to Professor Guntoro, the late Gatot Murdjito demonstrated deep care and wholehearted dedication in mentoring students, leaving a lasting impression on those who had learned from and interacted with him. 

“He will always be remembered for his dedication, exemplary character, and service to education and society,” he said.

He was also known as a warm and supportive individual to those around him. His daughter-in-law, Galih Sekarayu, shared that during his lifetime, her father-in-law treated her like his own daughter. She described him as someone who never expressed anger and consistently offered encouragement, particularly regarding work and maintaining good health. 

“He always reminded us to stay enthusiastic at work and to take care of our health. That was the message he conveyed most often,” she recalled.

As an educator, he frequently imparted advice that left a deep impression on his family. One principle Sekarayu remembers most is his guidance on work: to love one’s job, to pursue it diligently, and to carry it out professionally. According to her, these values have become guiding principles in navigating life and building a career.

His dedication to education and community service remains a living legacy within Universitas Gadjah Mada. Through his role in community engagement, Gatot Murdjito instilled social awareness, leadership, and a strong spirit of service. His exemplary conduct and integrity will continue to be remembered as integral to UGM’s KKN-PPM journey.

Gatot Murdjito was born in Kutoarjo on Sep. 27, 1948. He pursued his higher education at Universitas Gadjah Mada, earning a bachelor’s degree from the Faculty of Animal Science in 1978 and a master’s degree from the Graduate Program in 1989. He began serving as a civil servant on Mar. 1, 1980, and concluded his tenure on Oct. 1, 2013.

The “Father of KKN” has now departed. Many alumni recall his dedication to mentoring students facing challenges while serving in remote villages across Java Island in the late 1990s and early 2000s. He was laid to rest on Saturday, Feb. 14, at 10:00 a.m. WIB at the UGM Cemetery in Sawitsari.

Professor Sasongko Pramonohadi served as a Professor in the Department of Electrical Engineering and Information Technology (DTETI) at the Faculty of Engineering (FT UGM). As a lecturer, he possessed extensive expertise in energy conversion, transmission, distribution, and electric power systems.

Secretary of the UGM Board of Professors, Professor Wahyudi Kumorotomo, expressed his deepest condolences to the bereaved family. He described Professor Sasongko Pramonohadi as a devoted educator, a role model, and a colleague who was deeply respected and admired. 

“May the late professor be granted the best place by Allah SWT and may all his good deeds be accepted. May the family he leaves behind be given patience, strength, and sincerity,” he said on Sunday (Feb. 8) while leading the tribute and farewell ceremony at the UGM Balairung.

Professor Kumorotomo noted that Professor Sasongko Pramonohadi delivered his inaugural professorial address at the University’s Open Senate Meeting on Wednesday, Sept. 2, 2015.

In his view, the late professor was an academic and researcher in Electrical Engineering, particularly in Energy Systems and Power Generation, at FT UGM.

On this final occasion of remembrance, he also requested permission, on behalf of Universitas Gadjah Mada, to express gratitude for the late professor’s role and contributions as an educator and an exemplary figure within the UGM academic community.

“May all the knowledge, dedication, and scholarly contributions of the late professor, God willing, become lasting acts of devotion for the advancement of science in the future. In closing, may Allah SWT grant forgiveness and a noble place in eternal peace to Professor  Sasongko Pramonohadi. May Allah SWT continue to guide and protect us all as we advance knowledge and carry forward his works and innovations in the years to come,” he concluded.

The dedication and lifelong service of Professor Darmawidjaja over decades in advancing the field of mathematics are remembered as an enduring example for future generations.

Vice Dean for Finance, Assets, and Human Resources of FMIPA UGM, Dr. Reza M. I. Pulungan, in delivering the late professor’s biography, conveyed that he was an educator with a profound commitment to the development of mathematics, particularly in the field of analysis.

According to Dr. Pulungan, the late professor was not only an academic but also a leader who actively contributed to FMIPA UGM’s growth through the various strategic positions he held. 

“He was a prominent figure in mathematics who mentored many outstanding students and made significant contributions to the advancement of mathematics in Indonesia,” he added.

Professor Darmawidjaja was born in Kuala Lumpur on Jan. 10, 1938. He completed his primary and secondary education in Indonesia before pursuing higher education and earning his doctoral degree in 1986.

He attained his highest academic rank, that of professor of mathematics, at FMIPA UGM in 1991. Throughout his career, he also served as head of the Department of Mathematics and was actively involved in professional organizations, including serving as president of the Indonesian Mathematical Society.

Deep condolences were also expressed by the secretary of the UGM Board of Professors, Professor Wahyudi Kumorotomo, representing the university leadership and the broader academic community. He remembered the late professor as a diligent scholar with a serious dedication to his field. 

“This is reflected in the extensive body of scientific publications he produced, both in the form of books and journal articles,” he said.

Beyond his academic legacy, Professor Kumorotomo recalled the late professor as a warm and humble individual in everyday life. 

“In daily interactions, he was a courteous, friendly colleague who always made others feel at ease. He was also fond of playing badminton in his time,” he remarked.

He invited all those present to offer prayers for the late professor, wishing him eternal peace. 

“Let us accompany him to his final resting place with prayers, and may Allah SWT forgive his shortcomings, multiply his good deeds, and grant him the most honorable and peaceful place,” he concluded.

Artikel Professor Soeparna Darmawidjaja from FMIPA UGM Passed Away at 87 pertama kali tampil pada Universitas Gadjah Mada.

The Chair of the UGM Professorial Board, Professor Muhammad Baiquni, on behalf of the UGM community, conveyed his deepest condolences to the bereaved family. 

The late Professor Harsono was a specialist in Neurology (Neuroscience) at FK-KMK UGM. He delivered his inaugural professorial address on December 4, 2004, entitled “Characteristics of Epilepsy in Women”.

During his lifetime, Professor Baiquni noted, the late Professor Harsono was once assigned by the government to provide healthcare services in Irian Jaya. In addition to gaining extensive lessons and experience, he also had the opportunity to contribute significantly to medical education. 

“In many instances, besides providing healthcare services, he also guided nurses in neurological education. With his vast experience and dedication as an academic staff member, the late Professor Harsono was bestowed a great honor and inaugurated as a permanent professor at the Faculty of Medicine in 2004,” Professor Baiquni said at the Balairung, Friday (Dec. 5).

In his view, beyond being known as a diligent scholar deeply devoted to his field, Professor Harsono was also passionate about Javanese dance, particularly wayang orang, which he had pursued since childhood. 

He even participated in various festival performances in several cities and served as the Chair of the Wayang Bocah Association for children from kindergarten through junior high school.

“Finally, let us escort the late Professor Harsono to his final resting place with prayers, asking that God Almighty forgive his sins, multiply his good deeds, and grant him the most peaceful and noble place by His side. May the family left behind be granted strength and fortitude. Ameen,” he said.

The Dean of FK-KMK UGM, Professor Yodi Mahendradhata, added that the late Professor Harsono was one of FK-KMK UGM’s finest sons, born in Sawit, Boyolali, on December 12, 1945, who devoted almost his entire life to the advancement of medical education in Indonesia. 

He completed his medical degree at the UGM Faculty of Medicine from 1964 to 1971 and his specialization in Neurology from 1980 to 1982. 

“Professor Harsono began his career as a healthcare professional in Jayapura before returning to devote himself to UGM in 1987 as an educator, innovator, and academic leader,” the dean said.

Professor Harsono’s career progressed steadily and consistently from lecturer to senior academic ranks, culminating in his inauguration as Professor of Neurology on February 1, 2004. 

He held various strategic positions, including Chair of the Educational Development Unit, Vice Dean for Student Affairs, Head of the UGM Center for Educational Development (P3) for several terms, and Special Staff to the Rector for the development of learning methods. 

“At the national level, Professor Harsono also served as Chair of the Indonesian Neurology Collegium from 2007 to 2015,” Professor Mahendradhata noted.

As a colleague, Professor Mahendradhata regarded Professor Harsono as a true teacher who embodied the patrap triloka philosophy throughout his life: ing ngarso sung tulodho, ing madya mangun karso, lan tut wuri andayani (a leadership philosophy that he consistently practiced in every sphere of his service).

His dedication to education at FK-KMK UGM was considered extraordinary, and Professor Harsono successfully brought educational innovation to the international stage.

He led the transformation of the curriculum toward problem-based learning (PBL), which later became a national standard, and played a major role in instilling the spirit of student-centered learning during his tenure as Head of P3. 

“In the professional sphere, Professor Harsono advanced neurological education in Indonesia through improvements in the role of clinical educators, residency curricula, and the quality of national examinations,” Professor Mahendradhata explained.

Professor Mahendradhata further shared that, behind all his academic achievements, Professor Harsono was a person deeply devoted to culture. With his profound appreciation for wayang orang and gamelan, his leadership reflected a gentle harmony akin to a beautiful gamelan orchestration. 

“His nurturing presence across generations led colleagues, students, and friends to respectfully call him Romo. Sugeng kondur, Romo Harsono. May you be granted a beautiful and peaceful place, a good end, and eternal serenity in heaven,” the dean concluded.

Artikel UGM Mourns the Passing of Renowned Neurology Scholar Professor Harsono pertama kali tampil pada Universitas Gadjah Mada.

Professor Sukamdi passed away on Sunday, Nov. 16, 2025, at the UGM Academic Hospital (RSA UGM) and was laid to rest on the same day at the UGM Sawitsari Family Cemetery. Before the burial, the late professor’s remains were placed in the UGM Balairung Hall for funeral prayers and for the university community to pay their final respects.

The late professor’s eldest daughter, Dyani Priamsari, remembered her father as the central figure of their family. She described him as a caring husband, father, and grandfather, expressing hope that his guidance and advice would continue to serve as a compass for the family.

Priamsari also conveyed the late professor’s apologies and requested prayers for the acceptance of his good deeds and the forgiveness of his shortcomings. She invited anyone with unresolved matters regarding the late professor to reach out to the family. 

“We also sincerely apologize if, during his lifetime, our late father ever erred, made mistakes, or unintentionally hurt anyone. We ask for your forgiveness. And if any matters may remain unresolved, please do not hesitate to contact us,” she said.

UGM Rector, Professor Ova Emilia, expressed her profound condolences on the passing of Professor Sukamdi. She prayed that he would be granted the best place in the sight of Allah SWT and that his good deeds be accepted. 

On this occasion, Professor Emilia extended her gratitude to all who came to pay their final respects to a figure widely regarded as a teacher, mentor, and esteemed colleague. 

“On behalf of the family of Universitas Gadjah Mada, I express our heartfelt condolences on the passing of the late professor. May Allah SWT grant him the best place and may all his good deeds in this world be rewarded,” the rector said.

Professor Emilia highlighted the late professor’s longstanding dedication to Population Geography and Demography. He was widely recognized for his strong scholarly focus on population and development, migration and urbanization, as well as poverty and employment. 

His dedication was also reflected in the institutional roles he held, including serving as Vice Dean for Academic Affairs and Research at Geography UGM (2008–2012) and Head of the Laboratory of Population and Economic Resources from 2022 to 2025.

“We are all grateful to have had the opportunity to learn from and interact with Professor Sukamdi. He was a teacher and a model of integrity for the UGM academic community,” the rector concluded.

“On behalf of the entire UGM family, we express our deepest condolences to the family of Professor Nursamsi Pusposendjojo. May the late professor find the most honourable place in the presence of the Almighty,” said Professor Baiquni, Chair of UGM Board of Professors, while leading the farewell ceremony at Balairung on Tuesday, Oct. 28, 2025. 

Professor Baiquni recalled that Professor Pusposendjojo was officially inaugurated at the UGM Faculty of Agriculture on Tuesday, Jan. 8, 2008, delivering a speech entitled “Fungi and Plant Health, and Their Implications in the Era of Global Change.”

In that lecture, the late professor emphasised the critical role of humans as vectors and disseminators of plant pathogens in the era of free trade. 

“In an era characterised by vast openness, including the implementation of a free trade system, the situation has resulted in the unrestricted movement of people and goods, including agricultural materials and products. Agricultural materials and products are easily traded and transported between countries through import and export activities,” he noted. 

Professor Baiquni further described Professor Pusposendjojo as a modest individual and a diligent scholar devoted to his field. 

The late professor was known not only for his deep academic commitment but also as one of UGM’s finest sons who continually worked hard, devoting his energy and time to the university’s development. Among his administrative roles, the late professor served as Assistant Dean I (Academic Affairs) at the faculty from 1991 to 1993, and as Assistant Vice-Rector V (Planning) at UGM from 1995 to 1999. 

“In closing, let us accompany the late Professor Nursamsi Pusposendjojo to his final rest, while praying that the Almighty grants forgiveness for his sins, multiplies his good deeds, grants him a peaceful and most noble place by His side, and grants the family left behind steadfastness. Ameen,” concluded Professor Baiquni.
