The initiative reflects SPs UGM’s commitment to building a collaborative ecosystem that brings together universities, governments, and local communities to address shared challenges in border regions. Given their geographic proximity and interconnected development priorities, Indonesia and Timor-Leste require stronger collaboration to generate sustainable solutions through education, research, and community service.

Professor Widyanto Dwi Nugroho, Vice Dean for Academic Affairs, Student Affairs, and Cooperation at SPs UGM, said Timor-Leste has become one of the Graduate School’s strategic partners through its flagship Cross-Border Partnership initiative, which supports UGM’s Tridharma mission.

“The Cross-Border Partnership is one of SPs UGM’s flagship Tridharma initiatives, with Timor-Leste serving as a strategic partner because the two countries share a land border,” he said in a statement released on Wednesday (July 22).

Throughout the visit, SPs UGM explored multidisciplinary collaboration in border development, food security, public health, natural resource management, community empowerment, cultural preservation, and human resource development.

“We want our research to generate not only scientific publications but also practical solutions that address the challenges faced by border communities,” Professor Widyanto said.

Unlike conventional partnerships that focus primarily on signing memoranda of understanding, the Cross-Border Partnership integrates education, research, and community service into a single collaborative framework. The initiative brings together faculty members and students from different disciplines while connecting partners in Indonesia—particularly East Nusa Tenggara—with institutions in Timor-Leste.

SPs UGM, the Dili Institute of Technology (DIT), and Kagama Timor-Leste jointly organized a series of academic activities that reflected their collaborative approach. The institutions hosted a focus group discussion and a mini seminar, bringing together DIT leaders, students, academics, and participants from UGM’s Community Service Program (KKN-PPM).

The forum was officially opened by Timor-Leste’s Second Deputy Prime Minister, Mariano Assanami Sabino Lopes, who reaffirmed his government’s commitment to strengthening cooperation with UGM and encouraged students to embrace challenges as opportunities for personal growth.

“As young people, you must welcome challenges, because that is where character is built,” he said.

One of the forum’s key agendas was introducing opportunities for Timor-Leste students to participate in SPs UGM’s non-degree international student program. The program allows international students to study, conduct research, and participate in academic activities at UGM for a specified period without enrolling in a full degree program.

Professor Widyanto said the partnership also creates broader learning opportunities for UGM students. Through collaboration with the KKN-PPM UGM program in Belu Regency, students gain firsthand experience working with local communities, universities, and government institutions on both sides of the Indonesia–Timor-Leste border.

“Mapping local issues can inspire future research and community service programs in border regions with support from our partners,” he said.

Current research and community engagement initiatives under the Cross-Border Partnership include dryland agriculture, public health—particularly stunting prevention—medicinal plants, post-memory studies, and transboundary river basin management. The discussions also introduced government officials and members of Timor-Leste’s academic community to SPs UGM’s academic programs and opportunities for collaborative research and capacity building.

Professor Widyanto said the initiative represents more than promoting academic programs. It lays the foundation for long-term collaboration through academic mobility, joint research, innovation, and institutional partnerships that support the sustainable development of border communities.

The working visit also complemented UGM’s KKN-PPM activities in Belu Regency, which include cross-border exchange programs. Through these initiatives, SPs UGM aims to build partnerships that go beyond institutional agreements by generating tangible impact through collaborative research, capacity building, academic mobility, and innovation.

“We hope this collaboration will continue to grow and lead to even more meaningful and impactful initiatives,” Professor Widyanto concluded.

During the visit, the SPs UGM delegation met with representatives from Universitas Nusa Cendana (Undana), Kupang State Agricultural Polytechnic (Politani Kupang), the Belu Regency Government (BP4D), the Dili Institute of Technology (DIT), Kagama NTT, and Kagama Timor-Leste.

The signing ceremony was attended by Stellarvision delegates, including researcher Junse Oh, the UGM delegation led by Dr. Danang Sri Hadmoko, Vice Rector for Research, Business Development, and Partnerships, and other university officials.

Dr. Danang expressed his appreciation for the partnership between UGM and Stellarvision. He said the collaboration represents a strategic synergy expected to deliver innovative solutions to the longstanding challenge of detecting underground water pipe leaks, which have been difficult to identify and have resulted in significant water loss. The partnership is further strengthened by the involvement of a UGM alumnus who is currently pursuing a professional career at Stellarvision and is directly engaged in the collaboration.

“We appreciate the trust placed in UGM to jointly develop research and technology that can help address one of the major challenges in water governance, particularly the detection of underground water pipe leaks that have long been difficult to identify,” said Dr. Danang in a statement released to the media on Tuesday (Jul. 14).

Through this collaboration, Stellarvision’s FluidVision technology, which utilizes Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) satellite imagery, will be integrated with the testing facilities at UGM’s Agrotechnology Innovation Center (PIAT) in Sleman. The integration will support a six-month technology trial to test controlled underground pipe leak simulations and advance the project’s main objective.

Throughout the research period, UGM will ensure that all activities and simulations are conducted professionally and in accordance with the principles of good research governance. Protecting Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) and maintaining the confidentiality of both parties’ data will also remain key commitments throughout the collaboration.

“UGM is committed to ensuring that all research activities and leak simulations conducted over the next six months are carried out professionally. The protection of Intellectual Property Rights and the confidentiality of both parties’ data will be fully guaranteed in accordance with UGM’s internal regulations and the applicable laws of Indonesia,” he emphasized.

On the occasion, Dr. Danang also expressed his appreciation to everyone involved in preparing the collaboration, particularly the team from PIAT, the Inter-University Center of Excellence (PUAPT) Working Group on Water Security, and all parties who contributed throughout the planning process leading to the signing of the agreement.

He expressed hope that the partnership, built on trust, synergy, and integrity, would proceed successfully and produce innovations that support more effective and sustainable water resource management.

“We hope this first step, founded on the spirit of synergy and integrity, will progress smoothly and deliver real benefits to society through the development of more effective and sustainable water resource management technologies,” Dr. Danang concluded.

During the visit to Oxford, the UGM delegation met with Professor Susie Dunachie, Co-Director of Oxford Global Health, as well as seven alumni of UGM’s Faculty of Medicine, Public Health, and Nursing (FK-KMK UGM) who are currently pursuing doctoral studies at the university.

“The meeting provided a valuable platform for exchanging ideas on research developments and exploring ways to strengthen collaboration between our two institutions,” said Professor Gandes in a statement released on Monday (Jul. 13).

Professor Gandes explained that the meeting explored a range of potential collaborations, particularly in health and life sciences. Discussions covered the continuation of collaboration between FK-KMK UGM and the University of Oxford in the fields of artificial intelligence (AI), nutrition, community care, non-communicable diseases (NCDs), and the use of big data to support research and healthcare services. The two institutions also discussed opportunities between the University of Oxford’s Department of Biology and UGM’s Faculty of Biology (Biology UGM), including joint research initiatives and academic exchange programs.

The UGM delegation also expressed its interest in expanding academic mobility by sending UGM graduate students and research fellows to the University of Oxford.

“This initiative is expected to create broader opportunities for UGM’s academic community to engage in the global research ecosystem while strengthening the university’s research and educational capacity internationally,” Professor Gandes said.

The visit also served as an opportunity to strengthen ties between UGM and its alumni pursuing higher education in the United Kingdom. The presence of FK-KMK UGM alumni at the University of Oxford reflects the growing contribution and recognition of UGM graduates within the international academic community while opening greater opportunities for future collaboration with their alma mater.

In addition to visiting the University of Oxford, the Rector and the Director of Education and Teaching also paid a courtesy visit to the Embassy of the Republic of Indonesia (KBRI) in London. The delegation was received by the Indonesian Ambassador to the United Kingdom, Ireland, and the International Maritime Organization (IMO), Dr. Desra Percaya. The UGM delegation also met with the UGM Alumni Family (Kagama UGM) UK chapter to reinforce the university’s global alumni network.

The official visit concluded with a trip to the University of Dundee in Scotland, where the UGM Rector received an honorary Doctor of Laws (Doctor Honoris Causa) during the university’s graduation ceremony.

“This visit reaffirms UGM’s commitment to expanding its international partnerships, strengthening research and educational collaboration, and enhancing the university’s contribution to the advancement of knowledge globally,” Professor Gandes concluded.

He added that the rapid development of leather-processing technologies requires closer collaboration between universities and industry to deliver greater benefits.

“Animal Science UGM has established partnerships with various universities in Europe, including through the Erasmus program,” he said.

Professor Budi expressed hope that the partnership with Lianhua Leather Industry would extend beyond student internships to include collaborative research, innovation development, and the involvement of industry practitioners as guest lecturers. He added that synergy between academia and industry is essential for generating innovation and producing graduates equipped to meet the evolving needs of the leather sector.

Echoing Professor Guntoro’s remarks, Julius Kurniawan, Vice General Manager of PT Lianhua Leather Industry, welcomed the collaboration.

“We hope that UGM graduates will contribute to the leather industry, particularly in leather tanning,” he said.

Julius also expressed hope that the partnership would foster a mutually beneficial relationship between industry and higher education institutions.

Julius further noted that the company continues to face strong demand for skilled professionals to support its operations in Cianjur. For this reason, he believes collaboration with universities is a strategic approach to preparing competent human resources ready to enter the workforce.

Through this partnership, Lianhua Leather Industry will not only provide internship opportunities for students but also offer capacity-building opportunities for outstanding talent through scholarships for advanced study in China, helping develop stronger future contributors to the sector.

UGM Vice-Rector for Student Affairs, Community Services, and Alumni, Dr. Arie Sudjito, said that the university’s participation reflects the moral responsibility of higher education institutions to foster a safe, comfortable, and dignified educational environment. As a university established by and for the people of Indonesia, UGM is committed to creating a conducive learning environment for younger generations.

“This is part of the university’s moral responsibility to uphold civility, dignity, and serve as a medium for learning. Maintaining a safe and comfortable environment is a fundamental value of the educational process,” Dr. Arie said in an interview on Thursday (July 2).

He noted that this commitment is not new. UGM has long collaborated with the Regional Leadership Coordination Forum of the Special Region of Yogyakarta (Forkopimda DIY) through various academic and community service initiatives. These contributions have taken the form of scientific studies, discussions, the UGM Community Service Program (KKN-PPM UGM), community education, and policy recommendations based on research findings. Going forward, UGM will continue to optimize the implementation of the Tri-dharma of Higher Education to support the action plan.

“We will realize the Tri-dharma of Higher Education through education, research, community service, and various educational programs aimed at preventing violence and encouraging young people to develop their creativity in positive ways,” he said.

With continued cross-sector collaboration, Dr. Arie expressed hope that the initiative would move beyond the signing of a commitment and be implemented consistently.

“We hope this cross-sector collaboration will not remain merely symbolic but will continue to be carried out consistently. Addressing this issue requires collective action grounded in the values of humanism, civility, and dignity,” he concluded.

Meanwhile, the Regional Secretary of the Special Region of Yogyakarta, Ni Made Dwipanti Indrayanti, emphasized that juvenile delinquency should not be regarded as a minor issue. She likened behaviors such as skipping school or staying out late at night to early warning signs that can develop into more serious problems if left unaddressed.

“The safety of public spaces is a shared responsibility. We cannot simply blame families, schools, communities, or the children themselves. Families are the first line of defense; communities serve as the eyes and ears, while the state is responsible for enforcing the law and ensuring comprehensive rehabilitation,” she explained.

According to Indrayanti, implementing the action plan requires cross-sector synergy involving regional government agencies, security authorities, central government regional offices, communities, families, and universities. She stressed that academics play an essential role in analyzing issues, providing assistance, and creating positive activities that offer children and adolescents alternatives to risky behavior.

“We are talking about multisector collaboration involving regional government agencies, central government institutions, academics, and the community. Families are the first line of defense in protecting children, while universities play a major role in helping analyze problems, developing solutions, and creating positive activity spaces for children,” she concluded.

As part of the implementation, a task force (Satgas) will be established to carry out the strategy through three main pillars: prevention, enforcement, and rehabilitation. Prevention efforts will be coordinated by the Regional Education, Youth, and Sports Office together with relevant government agencies, focusing on securing public spaces and school environments. The enforcement pillar will involve the police, the Provincial National Narcotics Agency (BNNP), and the Prosecutor’s Office in addressing general criminal offenses, narcotics and psychotropic substance abuse, and the illegal distribution of alcoholic beverages. Meanwhile, the Regional Social Affairs Office, the Office for Women’s Empowerment, Child Protection, Population Control, and Family Planning (DP3AP2), and the Regional Health Office will lead rehabilitation efforts through comprehensive assessments, psychosocial recovery, and assistance for children in conflict with the law.

Amran said that many of UGM’s innovations have strong potential for implementation in Indonesia’s agricultural sector. He emphasized that commercializing research outcomes is a crucial step toward reducing the country’s dependence on imported commodities while strengthening the competitiveness of national agriculture. 

“Many of UGM’s innovations can be applied to Indonesia’s agricultural sector,” he said.

He explained that agricultural exports have now reached approximately Rp760 trillion, representing an increase of around Rp166 trillion during the first year of President Prabowo Subianto and Vice President Gibran Rakabuming Raka’s administration. Meanwhile, agricultural imports have declined by approximately Rp41 trillion, although significant opportunities for import substitution remain.

During the meeting, Amran and UGM discussed the development of approximately six strategic commodities under a collaboration valued at around Rp40 billion, which will be granted to UGM. The initiatives include innovations in soybeans, garlic, livestock feed, coal-based fertilizer, and dairy cattle developed through UGM research.

Amran further explained that the soybean variety developed by UGM offers several advantages, including its non-genetically modified organism (non-GMO) status and larger seed size compared to imported soybeans. He described this as an excellent opportunity to leverage locally developed innovations rather than rely on imported products. The government also plans to oversee pilot projects for soybean and garlic cultivation across 1,000–2,000 hectares, proposed for Central Java. 

“If we can produce superior seeds ourselves, why should we buy them from abroad?” he said.

He added that the government wants to ensure that university research does not stop at the signing of memorandums of understanding but is translated into practical implementation. According to him, accelerating agricultural development requires close collaboration among the government, universities, and industry.

Meanwhile, UGM Vice Rector for Research, Business Development, and Partnerships, Dr. Danang Sri Hadmoko, said the meeting with the Minister of Agriculture followed earlier discussions between the ministry and the university. He noted that synergy between the government and higher education institutions is essential to sustaining Indonesia’s food self-sufficiency.

According to Danang, Indonesia’s achievement of rice self-sufficiency must be reinforced by strengthening seed sovereignty. Universities play a strategic role by developing superior crop varieties that can be adopted on a wider scale. 

“One of the key factors is achieving seed sovereignty. Universities have developed superior varieties, particularly the Gamagora rice variety, which we hope the government will adopt to support national food sovereignty,” he said.

He expressed hope that UGM’s innovations, not only in rice but also in other strategic commodities, would be increasingly utilized in government programs. According to Dr. Hadmoko, stronger government support for university research will accelerate the adoption of innovations to address national development challenges, particularly in the food sector. 

“This is the kind of collaboration we have been looking forward to, greater government commitment to supporting universities so that their research and innovations can be adopted and utilized for the nation’s benefit,” he concluded.

Danang stated that both parties reaffirmed their commitment to continuously support and facilitate communication between UGM and various strategic institutions in Chile. UGM will also strengthen its ongoing partnerships with several Chilean higher education institutions. He noted that one significant development is the ongoing collaboration process with Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile. This partnership is expected to serve as a gateway for expanding academic and research collaboration between Indonesia and Chile.

“We hope this collaboration will grow not only in education and academic exchange but also in joint research that supports the sustainable development agendas of both countries,” Danang said in a statement received on Monday (June 22).

During the discussion, Danang explained that the parties also addressed the importance of Indonesia’s involvement in Antarctic-related issues, particularly within the framework of the Antarctic Treaty System (ATS). Antarctica is viewed not only as a region for scientific research but also as a strategic area that requires active participation from the international community to maintain peace, environmental sustainability, and global scientific cooperation. 

“Government involvement is a crucial aspect of strengthening Indonesia’s position in developing future scientific cooperation and diplomacy related to Antarctica,” he said.

The Chilean Ambassador highlighted several potential areas for collaboration in Tropical–Polar Research involving the Chilean Antarctic Institute (INACH), Universidad de Magallanes (UMAG), Instituto Milenio BASE, and Universidad de Chile.

“This support includes facilitating communication, exploring partnership opportunities, and strengthening academic and research networks between the two countries,” Danang said.

In addition to Antarctic and climate change research, Danang emphasized that opportunities for collaboration between Chile and Indonesia remain wide open across various academic disciplines. He noted that several fields hold significant potential for joint development, including agriculture and food security, natural resource management, environment and sustainability, marine and fisheries studies, disaster management and climate change, as well as volcanology and geological disaster mitigation.

He further explained that Chile and Indonesia share similar volcanic characteristics, as both countries are located along active tectonic zones within the Ring of Fire. According to him, this similarity creates substantial opportunities for collaborative research on volcanic activity, disaster mitigation, volcano monitoring systems, geothermal energy, and the impacts of volcanism on the environment and society.

Meanwhile, Mario Artaza emphasized that Chile, particularly the city of Punta Arenas, occupies a highly strategic position as one of the primary gateways to Antarctica. He noted that the region’s infrastructure, logistics networks, and research ecosystem have developed significantly. As a result, Chile has become an important partner for Indonesia and UGM in enhancing participation in research and scientific activities in the Antarctic region.

Furthermore, the meeting highlighted the shared position of Chile and Indonesia as Global South countries that play an essential role in addressing global challenges. According to Ambassador Artaza, both nations share a common interest in strengthening the contribution of developing countries to strategic global issues. 

“These include climate change, environmental sustainability, natural resource management, and polar research,” he said.

Ambassador Artaza also expressed his commitment to supporting greater involvement of UGM and Indonesia in scientific activities and collaborations related to Antarctica. This support is based on the principles of equality, mutual respect, and shared interests. 

“The partnerships we build can generate benefits for Chile, Indonesia, and the broader international scientific community,” he concluded.

Sutopo explained that the partnership aims to identify and recruit human resources with diverse characteristics and competencies. Previously, Sulzer Indonesia had established collaborations with other universities, including Universitas Indonesia and Bandung Institute of Technology. Expanding these partnerships is expected to attract a broader range of talents.

“I see that graduates from different universities possess distinct characteristics. I need a combination of those qualities within my organization so that it does not become too homogeneous. I need diversity and fresh perspectives,” he said.

Professor Puji Astuti, Director of Partnerships and Global Relations, welcomed the initiative. She emphasized that internship programs enable companies to recruit truly competent employees. At the same time, students gain insight into the programs offered by companies and can assess how well they align with their academic backgrounds.

Beyond opportunities for students, Professor Puji also highlighted the possibility of collaboration involving UGM lecturers and academic staff.

“As a higher education institution, we continuously adjust our curriculum to meet industry needs. We would be pleased to be involved, so that when lecturers gain exposure to real-world cases in the field, they can incorporate those experiences into their teaching,” she said.

She further noted that several companies have previously submitted their business challenges and case studies for research at the university. Through such collaborations, UGM lecturers can strengthen their applied expertise while companies can identify promising students for future recruitment through talent scouting.

As part of the partnership, Sulzer Indonesia is opening broad opportunities for students interested in internships or fieldwork programs. Sutopo also explained the potential for cooperation related to technical issues faced by clients. Sulzer has frequently engaged universities as independent third parties to provide neutral assessments, and UGM could play a similar role.

Head of UGM’s Bureau of Digital Transformation (BTD UGM), Dr. Mardhani Riasetiawan, explained that digital transformation in higher education cannot focus solely on technology development. Transformation must begin with business process restructuring to ensure that every developed system strictly supports organizational needs.

This is essential because for years, individual units developed systems tailored to each requirement, making data and service integration a significant challenge. As a result, UGM began establishing a governance framework to connect business processes, data, applications, and technology under a unified development direction. 

“We realized that information systems had long been developed without a comprehensive architectural design. Enterprise architecture became the solution for building integration and providing a clearer direction for development,” he said.

According to Dr. Mardhani, the journey has been tested by adversity. Digital transformation often faces challenges related to changes in organizational culture because it affects various long-standing aspects of an institution. 

However, leadership commitment and support from various work units have been the key to implementing gradual change. Various policies and new mechanisms have been introduced to ensure that digital service development proceeds in a more structured manner and delivers tangible benefits to the academic community. 

“Change is not always comfortable at the beginning, but once implemented, we have experienced its benefits in building a healthier, more effective, and more adaptive organization,” he said.

Dr. Mardhani added that UGM’s digital transformation efforts aim not only to improve efficiency but to support better decision-making. Through more systematic mapping, the university can identify organizational needs while determining priorities for service development. 

The results of this mapping serve as the foundation for policymaking, system development, and institutional transformation. Consequently, every digital innovation developed has a clear connection to the university’s strategic objectives. This helps UGM ensure the sustainability of future technology development.

Simultaneously, Muhammad Alif Taufiqurrahman explained how enterprise architecture serves as the foundation of UGM’s digital transformation. Every proposal for new applications or features must begin with a clear identification of needs and business process mapping. This ensures that the developed tech genuinely addresses organizational requirements and avoids service duplication. In addition, all development processes are thoroughly documented, making future system integration and maintenance easier. 

“Business processes serve as the primary foundation because all data, applications, and technologies need to originate from the organization’s business processes,” he explained.

According to Alif, this has helped UGM establish more structured digital governance. Through comprehensive documentation, the university can understand the interconnections among services, data, applications, and technologies used by various work units. 

This information is essential for efficient digital service development while reducing the risk of fragmented systems operating independently. Enterprise architecture functions not as a token but rather as an instrument to ensure organizational transformation remains aligned with its established goals. 

“Enterprise architecture serves as the backbone of organizational transformation because it connects business processes, data, applications, and technology within a single integrated framework,” he said.

The implementation of digital transformation at the unit level was also presented by Dr. Dian Kesumapramudya Nurputra, a pediatrician and faculty member at UGM’s Faculty of Medicine, Public Health, and Nursing (FK-KMK UGM). In his presentation, he shared FK-KMK UGM’s experience in developing services and governance supported by integrated digital systems.

The implementation has helped the faculty improve service effectiveness while strengthening coordination among units involved in academic and administrative processes. A business process-based approach has also enabled more targeted system development aligned with user needs. FK-KMK UGM’s experience serves as one example of how digital transformation can support improvements in service quality across UGM.

During the discussion, the BSSN team expressed appreciation for UGM’s efforts to establish structured and sustainable digital governance. Various questions were raised regarding data integration, organizational change management, and strategies for sustaining digital transformation within large, complex institutions. 

The discussion also highlighted the importance of business process documentation and system development as foundations for strengthening digital services. The exchange between the two institutions was dynamic and provided new perspectives on managing digital transformation. The forum served as a valuable learning opportunity in the evolving challenges of digitalization.

This meeting is expected to strengthen collaboration between UGM and BSSN in developing more effective and integrated digital governance. Through the exchange of experiences and best practices implemented by each institution, both parties can gain new insights to support service enhancement and organizational development. 

UGM remains committed to continuing its digital transformation efforts with a focus on user needs and governance improvements. Meanwhile, input from BSSN will refine the various initiatives currently being developed. This collaboration is expected to encourage innovations that provide greater benefits to society.

The event served as a strategic platform for higher education institutions to share best practices while expanding cross-border collaboration. Various issues related to the future of higher education and the development of innovation ecosystems were also among the key topics of discussion.

The UGM delegation was led by UGM Rector, Professor Ova Emilia. Also joining the delegation were Dean of UGM’s Faculty of Agriculture (Agriculture UGM), Professor Jaka Widada, as well as representatives from Biology UGM, including the Dean, Professor Budi Setiadi Daryono, and Vice Dean for Finance, Assets, and Human Resources, Dr. Slamet Widiyanto.

The presence of a cross-faculty delegation reflected UGM’s commitment to expanding international collaboration across various fields of study. The forum also opened broader opportunities for cooperation in education, research, and innovation. UGM’s active participation is expected to strengthen the university’s position within global academic networks.

The forum, attended by dozens of universities from various countries, addressed a range of strategic issues related to the future of higher education. Discussions covered global governance development, the use of artificial intelligence in education, and the strengthening of international partnerships.

In addition to keynote speeches by global university leaders, the program also featured discussions on building innovation ecosystems and accelerating technology downstreaming through collaboration among universities, industry, and government. The diverse perspectives presented offered insights into the direction of transformation in higher education amid increasingly dynamic global changes. 

“This forum provides a highly strategic platform for UGM, particularly the Faculty of Biology, to expand networks and explore opportunities for international research and educational collaboration,” said Professor Daryono on Wednesday (Jun. 17).

During the forum, the UGM delegation also participated in a discussion session titled “Connecting the World: Shaping New Paradigms for Global Higher Education Cooperation”. The session explored best practices in developing cross-border academic partnerships, student and faculty mobility, and innovation in international education.

The discussion highlighted the importance of more inclusive and adaptive collaboration to address global challenges. Higher education institutions were recognized as playing a crucial role in building increasingly open and interconnected learning ecosystems. The forum also served as a platform to strengthen synergy among universities in developing global talent.

In addition to discussing educational cooperation, the forum also highlighted the relationship between academia and industry through the session “Linking Industry and Academia: Building a New Ecosystem for University Technology Transfer”. In this session, participants discussed strategies to accelerate the downstream application of research outcomes and to promote innovations that deliver tangible benefits to society.

Universities were encouraged to build closer collaboration with industry in technology development. This approach is considered important for increasing research relevance while strengthening universities’ contributions to sustainable development. The discussion aligns with UGM’s commitment to promoting innovation that addresses the needs of society and industry.

On the final day of the program, delegates from Biology UGM visited the Tan Kah Kee Innovation Laboratory and the Biomarine Research Institute. Both institutions are recognized as leading centers of innovation and research focusing on strategic technology development and multidisciplinary collaboration.

The visit provided insights into research management integrated with industrial and societal needs. The delegation also gained valuable perspectives on developing innovation ecosystems that support the sustainable downstream application of research outcomes.

In addition, the UGM delegation also visited the Xian An Biomedical Laboratory, which focuses on vaccine development and production for public health. This visit demonstrated how basic research can be transformed into products that provide broad public benefits.

The research facility highlighted the importance of synergy among academia, industry, and government in accelerating health innovation. Through these field visits, the delegation gained deeper insight into internationally standardized research management practices. 

“Visits to leading laboratories at Xiamen University provided real inspiration for how innovation ecosystems can be built collaboratively among universities, industry, and government,” added Professor Daryono.

UGM’s participation in the UCMSR forum is part of the university’s ongoing efforts to strengthen international networks and enhance the quality of higher education. Through various global forums, UGM continues to open opportunities for collaboration in education, research, innovation, and human resource development. Synergy with international universities and research institutions is expected to generate initiatives with broad societal impact.

Strengthening global partnerships is also a strategic step in addressing increasingly complex future challenges. Through closer collaboration, UGM continues to reinforce its contribution to sustainable global development.
